THE PREDICTION
This is a fascinating third round clash between former world number three Marin Cilic and current world number two Daniil Medvedev. 32-year-old Cilic is a Grand Slam champion having won the 2014 US Open and a Wimbledon finalist after finishing runner-up to Roger Federer here in 2017. The current world number 37 claimed his first ATP title in three years and his 19th overall at the Stuttgart Open last month on grass which is almost certainly his best surface. Whilst Daniil Medvedev has been vastly impressive so far in two wins over Jan-Lennard Struff and the prodigal Carlos Alcaraz, his grass credentials will be tested here in what could be a watershed moment for his chances at Wimbledon.
25-year-old Medvedev was the winner in their only previous encounter back in 2019 where the Russian began his onslaught on the North American hard swing. He beat Cilic in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Citi Open at the beginning of a trajectory that sees him within a shot of toppling Novak Djokovic as the world number one if he wins this Grand Slam. Cilic, however, has burst into the kind of defiant form we have expected for some time. The Croat has three titles on grass to his name, with Medvedev winning his first last week in Mallorca, and the patient game needed to weather the Russian’s impeccable storm. There could be sets in this for both players if Cilic keeps up his level but the safest option here is simply for world number two Medvedev to win outright and truly set the hype ablaze for a first Grand Slam title campaign.
