THE PREDICTION
30th seed Paula Badosa continues to go under the radar at Wimbledon but a straight-sets win over Yulia Putintseva was an excellent result on Thursday. The 23-year-old is enjoying her best year on tour with a first WTA title win at the Serbia Open and four-straight quarter-finals reached on clay including Roland-Garros. The fact that she has transferred that form well to the grass is immensely promising for her career and she looks to be the favourite here. However, world number 44 Magda Linette has so far laughed in the face of favourites and seeds as she backed up a great win over Amanda Anisimova on Wednesday with one of the best of her career in ousting the third seed Elina Svitolina.
This first meeting should be a vastly enjoyable watch with both players fighting fearlessly and Linette’s performances so far warrant her taking a set here at the least. Badosa has already played a three-set match against fellow Spaniard Aliona Bolsova and so taking this match to need a decider could be a useful option here. Otherwise, Badosa to win at least a set as the likeliest of two very capable winners seems the wisest move.
