THE PREDICTION

Karolina Pliskova meets Tereza Martincova in the third round at Wimbledon on Friday in an all-Czech affair and it is Pliskova who is favoured to progress. She has been extremely comfortable in both of her matches so far at SW19 winning in straight sets against Tamara Zidansek and Donna Vekic. She now faces compatriot Martincova and they have had one previous meeting on the WTA tour and that came back in 2019 when Pliskova won in New York on a hard court. Despite the straights set win, both sets went to the tiebreak and that highlights just how close that match was. Martincova will be motivated against her higher-ranked opponent as she will be eager to prove she can compete against her. She already has a win over a seeded opponent at Wimbledon this year as she beat 28th-seed Alison Riske in the first round. Ultimately Pliskova looks to have the edge but Martincova’s return game is good enough to create plenty of break points. Expect a close-fought match with it potentially going to three sets, but Pliskova has to be favoured to win.
