World number 79 Ilya Ivashka finds himself in the third round of a Grand Slam for a first time, and on his Wimbledon debut at that, after an impressive four-set victory over Jeremy Chardy on Thursday. The Belarusian had previously on made the second round of a major once at the 2019 Australian Open but he has enjoyed his best year on tour in terms of results including beating Alexander Zverev in Munich and taking a set off Rafael Nadal. In his way is another surprise third-rounder in world number 78 Jordan Thompson, who has emphatically fought his way two seriously tough draws. The 27-year-old took out the 12th seed Casper Ruud on Wednesday and proved his renowned fitness by taking out Kei Nishikori less than 24 hours later.
This first meeting between the two promises to be a baseline battle of the highest intensity but Thompson is the more experienced at this stage of a major. The Aussie forced his way through to the round of 16 of the US Open last season in much the same spirit as this but he looks to be the slight underdog in the markets. Therefore, taking the hard-working Aussie to eventually come through a likely marathon seems a valuable option here.
