23-year-old Frances Tiafoe turned heads on Monday when he thrashed the third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. We learned a lot more about the American from his second match, though, as he backed that up with another straight-sets victory, this time against hard-hitting Vasek Pospisil. The world number 57 is no stranger to a deep run after his breakthrough performance at the 2019 Australian Open. It took Rafael Nadal to beat him that day and 25-year-old Karen Khachanov will have to be at his very best if he is to make the third round instead. World number 29 Khachanov has come through two tough but winnable fixtures against Mackenzie McDonald and Egor Gerasimov, dropping just the one set. The Russian is one of the fitter men on tour and well capable of going the distance like he did when beating Tiafoe over five sets here back in 2018.
This second meeting between the two has five sets written all over it. Since their third round match here three years ago, Khachanov has played in six five-set matches and Tiafoe has endured a further six himself. Both players are extremely fit and likely to peak and trough in moments throughout this potentially electrifying encounter. At this moment in time Tiafoe is the favourite to come through but take this match to see over three sets if that option is available or even to see five as a one-off punt.
