26-year-old Nick Kyrgios’s form coming into Wimbledon would have been complete guesswork after the Aussie had played just six matches in 2021 but he is close to his best after two rounds here. His current ranking of world number 60 is nothing to go by and in the maverick Aussie’s case a ranking probably never is. Kyrgios’ mentality at SW19 this season is what counts and he is clearly having a wonderful time after a five-set epic with Ugo Humbert, again, and a straight sets win over Gianluca Mager in which frequently played with the crowd in his own unique way. In many ways watching Kyrgios at this major has been like an exhibition match with a purpose and that seems to be exactly how he likes it.
In his way of a fourth round of 16 placing at this Grand Slam is world number 19 Felix Auger-Aliassime, who overcame a tough test from Mikael Ymer on Thursday evening. The Canadian looked a little too predictable in places but, as he admitted afterwards, the 20-year-old is trying to be more ruthless on the court after eight ATP finals without a title so far. FAA beat Kyrgios in three tight sets back at Queen’s Club in 2019 but in many ways the Canadian was the unknowable quantity then and Kyrgios the predictable force.
