THE PREDICTION
World number seven Andrey Rublev got off to a slow start against Federico Delbonis in the first round but he overcame a potentially dangerous second round tie in straight sets against Lloyd Harris. The 23-year-old reached the Halle Open final as good preparation ahead of Wimbledon and he will be targeting the quarter-finals here at least having reached the last eight of the other three majors. In his way is 34-year-old Fabio Fognini, who has so far come through two clay-court specialists in Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Laslo Djere at the cost of just one set. The world number 31 has never made it past the third round at Wimbledon.
Fognini and Rublev have met on seven previous occasions and the Italian leads their head-to-head record 5-2 with many of those matches coming before the Russian’s evolution. Since Rublev really came into his own in 2020 the pair have played just once, where Rublev got the ball rolling in the ATP Cup final ahead of a Team Russia victory. Given that Fognini has had his troubles at SW19 before now and Rublev’s form on grass coming into this clash take the Russian to win outright here in what could be a thriller.
