THE PREDICTION
Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray was stunned by an incredible fight from German qualifier Oscar Otte late on Wednesday night but the 34-year-old battled back admirably to win in five sets. Murray will need every ounce of his day’s break before a third round clash with the 10th seed Denis Shapovalov but he played his best tennis this year in the fifth set and that is hugely welcome news for his fans. World number 12 Denis Shapovalov has also played five sets with a German opponent this week in a long battle with Philipp Kohlschreiber on Tuesday. However, the Canadian was afforded a walkover to the third round after Pablo Andujar was forced to pull out through injury. On the face of his performances this year, Shapovalov is unlikely to benefit from that extra rest.
This is the first meeting between 22-year-old Shapovalov and former world number one Murray and a deeply intriguing test for the Brit. Shapovalov is a highly talented player but if Murray can find the level he won his last two sets with on Wednesday night he is likely to be able to nullify a lot of the youngster’s weapons. Shapovalov remains the fairly solid favourite in this third round encounter but he has yet to play his very best tennis for long enough to win three sets in a row and for that reason take Murray to win at least a set here. It could go all the way again but if Murray’s once second-to-none defence is anywhere near his best this could be a memorable match in his illustrious career indeed.
