Former Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber was part of an absolute classic against Sara Sorribes Tormo on Thursday but her experience eventually told against the Spaniard. The 33-year-old won her first title since 2018 at the Bad Homburg Open last week and the confidence from that and Thursday’s epic will be w powerful force moving forward. In her way is world number 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who showed good control to put her first match with Serena Williams behind her by beating Nao Hibino in straight sets. The Belarusian has taken her chance well by reaching the third round for only a second time and can match her best Grand Slam showing if she wins here.
In this first meeting Sasnovich will have to play fearlessly if she is to find a way past this version of Angelique Kerber. The German has struggled over the last few years since topping the tour at world number one but having been here and done it before she should be able to again find her way through. Take Kerber to win outright in what she will hope is a less dramatic match than her last.
