THE PREDICTION
This is a huge occasion for both world number nine Matteo Berrettini and number 18 Hubert Hurkacz as one of them will reach a first Grand Slam final on Sunday. 25-year-old Berrettini has reached this stage before after losing to Rafael Nadal at the 2019 US Open but Hurkacz had not made it past the round of 16 before this campaign. The 24-year-old was exceptional against eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer on Wednesday evening, matching the Swiss for composure and eventually out-thinking him towards the end. Hurkacz’s play at the net has been nothing short of exemplary all fortnight and that coupled with an exceptional, deep and precise serve has seen him oust not only Federer but the second seed Daniil Medvedev who had looked good for the final. The Pole won his first Masters title back in April at the Miami Open having come out from nowhere there and he has exactly the right mentality to continue causing upsets at SW19.
However, 25-year-old Matteo Berrettini extended his winning streak to 10 on Wednesday by beating in-form Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets. The Italian number one has at once been a favourite to reach the final from his end of the draw and also seemingly been forgotten a bit in the madness of Wimbledon. Under the radar, Berrettini has serve the most aces of anybody this tournament by some distance and he backs that up with a wicked forehand that keeps most of his points short and sweet. With possibly the best one-two punch on tour right now, at least the most consistently powerful, he will be looking to keep Hurkacz as far away from the net as possible.
In what could be quite an old-school grass contest on Friday, seventh seed Matteo Berrettini remains the favourite due to his Queen’s win on grass and his confident streak. However, Hurkacz was the winner of their only previous encounter at the Miami Open back in 2019 and Berrettini was in strong form that season too. After both of their performances, especially Hurkacz’s elevation over the last two rounds, there looks to be sets in this for both players. Take both to win at least a set here with the Pole a clear and present danger to Berrettini’s pre-destined run to the final.
