THE PREDICTION
World number one Ash Barty made shirt work of beating fellow Aussie Ajla Tomjlanovic in the quarter-finals on Tuesday, conceding just four sets to reach her first semi-final at Wimbledon. The 25-year-old has just one Grand Slam to her name so far from Roland-Garros in 2019 but she is getting better all the time and looks to have the staying power needed to reside at the top of the game for some time yet. Barty added three WTA titles this year to her total of 11 and, discounting retirements through injury, she has lost just four times in 2021 to Petra Kvitova, Paula Badosa, Karolina Muchova and Aryna Sabalenka. Only second seed Sabalenka is left in the draw.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber claimed her Wimbledon title here in 2018 but she has reached the semi-finals here on three occasions and clearly loves the grass. Her first title in three years came two weeks ago at the Bad Homburg Open to see her on a 10-match winning streak now after a very convincing win over in-form Karolina Muchova on Tuesday. The 33-year-old is well-loved at SW19 and one of the best defenders on tour right now which makes for a really interesting match-up with Barty in the semi-finals.
Barty and Kerber are finely poised at 2-2 in their head-to-head record but have only faced each other on hard courts. The pair know each other’s game well and aesthetically this match should be an enthralling watch between Barty’s cool, precise offence and Kerber’s brick-wall defence. Kerber is likely to win the longer rallies and Barty should target the shorter points in front of an adoring crowd who will likely sway with their favour throughout. In many ways this should be the final on performances at Wimbledon this year but Barty’s level has been rising with each passing round. Take the world number one to win at least a set here as just about the likeliest winner of two champions.
