World number six Alexander Zverev put any doubts in his potential at Wimbledon this season firmly aside with an assured straight-sets victory over Tallon Griekspoor on Tuesday. The 24-year-old reached his first Grand Slam final last season at the US Open where he famously fell from two sets up to Dominic Thiem. It has taken the German some time to move past that but two great wins at the Mexican Open and a second Madrid Masters title show for a successful season on tour already. Zverev’s draw looks kind until the second week and if he gathers enough momentum he could be a dark horse for the final on his side of the draw.
In Zverev’s way is professional upset artist Tennys Sandgren, whose form over the last two years on tour has been woeful but he is a different animal at Grand Slams. The 29-year-old came through another dogged competitor in Norbert Gombos over four sets on Tuesday and he will play fearlessly against Zverev in their second ever meeting. Zverev beat Sandgren in two at the Citi Open in Washington four years ago but his record at majors speaks for itself. The world number 68 has reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open twice, most recently last season, and the round of 16 here back in 2019. Sandgren will fight until the final point and will be ready to pounce on any lapse in Zverev’s concentration. For this reason, taking Zverev to win outright is the wisest move in what could be a thriller.
