THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Gael Monfils wowed the Wimbledon crowds throughout a tough first round match with Aussie Christopher O’Connell. The 35-year-old still owns some of the most fantastic shot-making ever seen on a tennis court but as he reaches the twilight of his career he is struggling, at least this season, to get over the line at times. However, Monfils beat O’Connell over two days in five sets and he will feel a whole lot better about his form coming into the second round and a first meeting with Pedro Martinez.
World number 107 Martinez played very well to oust a strong grass-court player in Stefano Travaglia in the first round an the 24-year-old is a bundle of energy on court. The Spaniard has an excellent attitude to the graft and that could help him to at least a set in this match. It remains to be seen how well Monfils can back up his win but Martinez will know to stick with the Frenchman on every point. Take Martinez to win at least a set here in what could be another match sailing over three hours.
