THE PREDICTION
World number one Novak Djokovic has often been slow to start this season and he opened Centre Court at Wimbledon in much the same way against 19-year-old Jack Draper. The teenager put in another outstanding performance on grass to snatch the first set from underneath Djokovic’s nose but that sparked the Serb into action as he took the next three sets rapidly. The 34-year-old is coming off a second Roland-Garros title via a stunning campaign in Paris and so his first round performance here was always likely to be tight in places but he will be fully recalibrated from this round onwards.
This is a real blockbuster of a second round match between Djokovic and former world number five Kevin Anderson and if he can stay fit after a injury-plagued few years he will be gunning for revenge on Wednesday. Anderson’s only Grand Slam final came here in 2018 against Djokovic but the Serb’s brilliance overpowered the tired South African in straight sets after Anderson had fabulously beaten Roger Federer in five sets in the semi-finals. The 35-year-old got off to a slow start on Monday against qualifier Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera but he served an incredible 40 aces to come through in four sets.
Djokovic and Anderson have met 11 times previously and the world number one leads their head-to-head record 9-2 with this their fourth meeting at Wimbledon. Djokovic has won all three previous matches here, including a five-set thriller in 2015, and the Serb looks likely to extend that record in the second round here. In what has the potential for an emotional, enthralling contest, totally dependent on what level Anderson can bring to this battle, take Djokovic to win outright. Anderson is well capable of snatching a set here but you could add at least one tiebreak in the match outside of an accumulator.
