THE PREDICTION
19-year-old prodigy Marta Kostyuk claimed one of the biggest wins of her promising career on Tuesday when she took out the 17th seed Kiki Bertens in straight sets. The current world number 70 is only five places off her career-high WTA ranking and she looks set to surpass that very soon indeed in a trajectory that is only looking up. Her second round opponent is former world number 11 Anastasija Sevastova, who made short work of Zarina Diyas in the first round too. The 31-year-old made three-consecutive quarter-finals at the US Open between 2016-18 and went one better in the last of those years but elsewhere she has had little luck so far at the majors.
The pair are 1-1 in a head-to-head record not including Sevastova’s qualifying win at the Madrid Open earlier this year. Whilst Ukraine’s next big prospect Kostyuk is certainly one for the future, Sevastova’s three-set win against her at the Eastbourne International last week suggests the Latvian is the slight favourite on this surface. Still, to counteract that, Kostyuk beat Sevastova in their first meeting and that was Grand Slam conditions at the US Open last season. Taking either player to win at least a set here seems reasonable in what could likely go to a decider but side with the teenager here as Sevastova has never made it to the third round at Wimbledon before.
