World number 16 Maria Sakkari will face tougher foes than Arantxa Rus this fortnight at Wimbledon but a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Dutchwoman early on Tuesday is an excellent first result. Given that fellow Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas fell out of the draw yesterday, Sakkari could feel more eyes on her this Grand Slam from back home as a genuine contender for the title here and she thrives in big games under big pressure. Her loss in the Roland-Garros semi-finals to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova looks to have had a positive effect on her resolve and it should take a player inside the top 20 to oust her here.
Taking on the mantle is world number 46 Shelby Rogers after the industrious American took out Aussie veteran Sam Stosur in three sets on Tuesday. The 28-year-old has a solid 17-14 record for the season so far and achieved a career-high 43rd in the WTA rankings back in April so she is enjoying some of the best form of her career. However, 25-year-old Sakkari’s playstyle is truly something to behold and it is hard to see Rogers defend against it well enough to cause an upset here. Take Sakkari to blast through this first meeting in straight sets.
