THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Jordan Thompson is renowned for his grit and he proved that in an incredible five-set slog with the 12th seed Casper Ruud. His win over the Norwegian is almost certainly one of the best of Thompson’s career and he will be full to the brim on confidence and, crucially, fit to go again when he faces Kei Nishikori for a second time. World number 53 Nishikori was assured in a straight-sets win over big-hitting Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday morning and the Japanese star will also be fresh and ready to take part in what could be a thriller.
Former world number four Nishikori has made the quarter-finals in each of his last two campaigns here in Wimbledon, with his injury setbacks coming soon after a four-set loss to Roger Federer in 2019. The 31-year-old is targeting a return to the top 10 but he has struggled at times to string great performances together this season. He beat Thompson comfortably in their previous meeting back in 2017 but over five sets Thompson will back himself to take at least one. This could be close all the way to the end so take Nishikori to win outright here or for Thompson to win at least a set.
