THE PREDICTION
World number four Aryna Sabalenka played out an odd match with unorthodox qualifier Monica Niculescu to come through handily in straight sets. The second seed here has an incredible shot at a first Grand Slam title as she sits in the easier half of the draw but there are doubts over her consistency. Still young at 23 years old, the Belarusian won her first Masters titles earlier this season at the Madrid Open on clay which is at this stage possibly her best surface. Sabalenka is a too powerful not to find success on grass, though, and only needs a consistent run of wins for the hype to grow around her here.
On a day of near misses for many British hopefuls at Wimbledon, Katie Boulter came through her first round match in three difficult but ultimately impressive sets against Danielle Lao. The 24-year-old reached a career-high 82nd in the WTA world rankings back in 2019 but currently resides at 219th, making this quite possibly the biggest match of her career so far. Sabalenka was the winner in straight sets in their only previous encounter which was also a Grand Slam second round match at the Australian Open in 2019. It is hard to see anything other than a second straight-sets victory here but Boulter will be well supported by the Wimbledon faithful and it could end up tight in places. Take the second seed to come through in two, though.
