22nd seed Jessica Pegula became the latest player to benefit from Caroline Garcia’s wavering form to beat the Frenchwoman in comfortable straight sets on Tuesday. The world number 26 has really come into her own over the last few years and so already she has beaten her best showing at Wimbledon having lost in the first round back in 2019. The American will face in-form Ludmilla Samsonova on Wednesday with the Russian backing -up her first WTA title win at the German Open less than two weeks ago with an assured straight-sets victory over Kaia Kanepi in the first round here.
27-year-old Pegula is a gritty player who often takes a set even in defeat and whilst she beat Samsonova in a qualifying match last season this first tour-level meeting looks a proper duel. 22-year-old Samsonova beat a series of big names, most notably Victoria Azarenka and Belinda Bencic, on grass at the German Open and that kind of form must be respected after what Barbora Krejcikova took into Roland-Garros.
