THE PREDICTION
34-year-old Jeremy Chardy put in one of the best performances of his excellent season overall to oust the 20th seed Aslan Karatsev in straight sets on Wednesday. The Frenchman is a well-loved ever-present on tour but he will be hoping for an uncharacteristically deep run at SW19 this year after some exceptional performances as a new dad in 2021. The world number 61 will also have his attentions on the Men’s Doubles alongside usual partner Fabrice Martin, although they will play their first match after this second round encounter with Ilya Ivashka. World number 79 Ivashka is enjoying his best season on tour so far at 267 years old and he famously took a set off Rafael Nadal on clay earlier this season as well as beating Alexander Zverev in Munich. The Belarusian beat Jaume Munar in straight sets to reach the second round of Wimbledon on his debut here.
This could be a lengthy first meeting between Chardy and Iavshka with both players perfectly comfortable to slog it out on their baselines. Given their respective performances there could well be at least a set in this for both players and Ivashka has recent history of causing upsets too. Chardy should realistically be winning this in straight sets given his season but take the Frenchman to come through as outright winner in a match that has a tiny sense of the upset about it.
