World number 79 Irina-Camelia Begu took out American qualifier Katie Volynets in straight sets on Monday and has so far been lucky to avoid any kind of rain delay as she faces Petra Martic in the second round. World number 30 Martic was also able to come through her first round match on Monday, coming back from a set down against Varvara Gracheva to win well in three, and the Croat is a player who grows into tournaments with each passing round.
30-year-old Martic enjoyed a solid clay season and came perilously close to the Italian Open final before defeat to the reigning champion Karolina Pliskova. She has reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon before and could go under the radar at SW19 if the draw continues to offer up these kind ties.
