World number 18 Hubert Hurkacz snapped a six-match losing streak on tour with a huge three-set victory over rising star Lorenzo Musetti on Tuesday. The Pole won his maiden Masters title at the Miami Open in April and has seriously struggled with all manner of issues since but a straight-sets victory in the first round of a Grand Slam will be an invaluable boost to his confidence. Following that result, the 14th seed will be an entirely different prospect and that means a potentially tough day for world number 66 Marcos Giron. The American is slowly making his way up the ATP on the back of an industrious game and a never-say-die attitude that saw him oust promising young Finn Emil Ruusuvuori in five sets yesterday.
This first meeting should be a well-contested battle but there is a significant advantage in it for 24-year-old Hurkacz with the extra day’s rest and his opponent coming in less than 24 hours after a five-setter. Hurkacz’s nerves must still be treated with a pinch of salt but he will grow with each round of this tournament so take him to win outright here in what could go anywhere from straight-sets to four hours on court.
