World number 60 Nick Kyrgios delivered on his return to Wimbledon in a five-set epic with Ugo Humbert, beating the Frenchman 9-7 in the deciding set. The 26-year-old has played very little tennis over the last 18 months but he beat Humbert in five for the second time this season after the pair shared another classic at the Australian Open and his performance should strike fear in those in his portion of the draw. A first meeting with Gianluca Mager has all the hallmarks of another potential thriller, with the Italian unlikely to be in awe of the charismatic Aussie. Mager, also 26, looks his best on the clay but a solid four-set defeat of Juan Ignacio Londero on Tuesday was impressive enough on his Wimbledon debut.
Mager will do his utmost to stay in the rallies and hope that Kyrgios’ powerful serving shoulder is a little stiff after such a lengthy first match but it may not be enough.
