THE PREDICTION
World number 57 Frances Tiafoe put in one his best performances yet on Court 1 yesterday as he put out the 3rd seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in three incredible sets. The 23-year-old reached a career-high 29th in the world back in a breakthrough 2019 but he has always been capable of these kinds of performances, though Tsitsipas certainly still had the Roland-Garros final in his mind. Tiafoe will face world number 65 Vasek Pospisil for the first time in great confidence and likely on a big court once more after the American worked the crowd well on Monday.
31-year-old Pospisil also won his first round match in straight sets against Roberto Carballes Baena in keeping with some strong recent performances on grass and he will in many ways be a tougher prospect for Tiafoe than Tsitsipas. Tiafoe clearly thrives on the limelight but a win like that in the first round needs careful management off-court. If he can recalibrate to face hard-hitting baseliner Pospisil he should be able to come through as outright winner but the Canadian is well capable of snatching a set or forcing a tiebreak. We will learn plenty more about Tiafoe’s Wimbledon campaign in this second round match than his first but for now the measured approach is for the American to win outright.
