THE PREDICTION
34-year-old Elena Vesnina eventually beat Martina Trevisan in comfortable straight sets to reach the second round of a Grand Slam for just the second time since the Australian Open in 2018. The Russian spends most of her time enjoying some success in the Doubles side of the game but a third round placing at Roland-Garros at the start of June raised some eyebrows. The former world number 13 will face the unenviable prospect of playing the villain of the piece against 17-year-old Coco Gauff for a first time on Thursday. The world number 23 beat a tough opponent in Francesca Jones to reach the second round without much fuss but the hype will be starting to heap upon her at SW19 with every passing round.
With a few shocks already developing at Wimbledon and the unfortunate loss of Serena Williams through injury, it will not be long before Gauff is being touted as a genuine contender for the title – which of course she is. Take Gauff to beat Vesnina in straight sets on Thursday as she targets back-to-back quarter-finals at Grand Slams.
