THE PREDICTION
The intriguing resurgence of Coco Vandeweghe continued on Wednesday morning as the former world number nine from 2018 won her first match at Wimbledon since 2017. The 29-year-old reached the quarter-finals that year, and the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and US Open, before succumbing to a series of frustrating injuries and she will be delighted to be back with a vengeance. Vandeweghe first turned heads two weeks ago when she reached the semi-finals if the Birmingham Classic and after a convincing straight-sets win over Olga Govortsova yesterday she will be tough to beat.
Her opponent, though, only conceded the one game in her first round match as Katerina Siniakova continued her excellent form that saw her finish runner-up to Angelique Kerber at the Bad Homburg Open last week. The Czech was part of Barbora Krejcikova’s incredible rise at Roland-Garros as her title-winning Women’s Doubles partner and that experience looks to have lifted the 25-year-old into a more confident competitor. This should be a fascinating match and the winner is hard to pick in this first meeting, so take Vandeweghe to win at least a set here as the more experienced on grass.
