World number 120 Claire Liu came through the qualifiers to reach her second ever Wimbledon main draw and she has emulated her best showing here by making the second round. The 21-year-old won the Girls’ title here in 2017 and certainly has a bright future ahead of her, proving that by taking out a solid competitor in Misaki Doi 9-7 in the deciding set. However, Liu faces a player one year older and several years ahead in terms of progression in the 18th seed Elena Rybakina. The 22-year-old is a powerful new addition to the top 20 who beat Serena Williams in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros earlier this month and she made short work of Kristina Mladenovic in the first round.
World number 20 Elena Rybakina should be targeting the second week at least here such is her current form and the Kazakh should simply be too powerful for Liu at this stage of the American’s career. Take Rybakina to win in straight sets.
