18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz put in a monumental shift to win his debut match at Wimbledon in five sets against lucky loser Yasutaka Uchiyama. The Spaniard faced his idol and compatriot Rafael Nadal on his 18th birthday at the Madrid Masters back in May and after an excellent Roland-Garros campaign he has brought strong form straight onto the grass to take on world number two Daniil Medvedev. 25-year-old Medvedev won the Mallorca Championships on Saturday and did fantastically well to come through a tough first round match here against Jan-Lennard Struff. The German has beaten Medvedev at the Halle Open exactly two weeks previous so a four-set victory to start off his campaign here following a title win was exemplary focus.
In this mood, Medvedev is not the kind of player Carlos Alcaraz wanted to draw. The teenager will be fearless in this first meeting but it is hard to see how best he can hurt the Russian on Thursday. Medvedev will have designs on a second Grand Slam final in less than two weeks’ time as seeds continue to fall out of the draw and he will be eager to exert his dominance from the off.
