THE PREDICTION
World number 21 Grigor Dimitrov went a set down against Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco in a very popular match with spectators before eventually coming through in four. The Bulgarian looked a little jaded in places but that is fairly normal these days in what is proving to be another frustrating season so far. The 30-year-old is wholly unpredictable as one of the hottest and coldest blowers on tour and, with Alexander Bublik possibly topping that list for unpredictability, this should be an enthralling match. With emphasis on the ‘should’.
World number 38 Bublik comfortably beat fellow Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin in straight sets on Wednesday but it is rare for the 24-year-old to fall at the first hurdle. Bublik’s concentration levels are some of the worst in the game but he is an inescapably charismatic character who wins over crowds with his lax attitude to his own occasional brilliance and often shocking mistakes. Bublik beat Dimitrov in their only previous encounter back in 2019 at the Chengdu Open. That came over three sets and both players taking at least one here seems the only reasonable option to take. If over three sets is an available option, take it. Otherwise pick the more experienced Dimitrov to win at least a set or better still stay well clear of this absolute head-scratcher.
