THE PREDICTION
Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer was part of a predictably classy encounter with the 29th seed Cameron Norrie on Saturday that he ultimately won in four sets. The 39-year-old is proving a lot of people wrong after double knee surgery and he looks to be improving, physically and mentally, with each passing round. Whether or not that can continue for seven matches remains to be seen, but the Swiss has never lost in the third round or round of 16 at Wimbledon before and he is halfway now to upholding that personal record for another year. Federer won his last of eight title here in 2017 and his last of a joint-record 20 Grand Slam title at the Australian open in 2019.
The world number eight will face Lorenzo Sonego for a second time having beaten the Italian in the first round of Roland-Garros in 2019 but Sonego is something of a late bloomer at 26 years old and he will be a much tougher prospect here. The world number 27 has enjoyed a relatively comfortable draw so far on a surface he is still working out despite reaching the final of the Eastbourne International last week. Sonego is well capable of beating the very best and he exploded onto the scene at the Vienna Open last season after stunning Novak Djokovic in straight sets there but without that element of surprise he can occasionally be overpowered. It is difficult to say what might take place here on Monday with Federer’s fitness an unknowable factor but he should be able to win outright here to reach the quarter-finals where the truly toughest tests begin.
