THE PREDICTION
World number one and double-defending Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic was part of a fabulous match on Court 1 with friend off the court Denis Kudla. The 28-year-old American put in the kind of performance that baffles as to why he is currently ranked outside the top 100 but Djokovic was able to overcome a tough test to win a second-successive match in straight sets. The Serb will take on Cristian Garin next after the Chilean beat Pedro Martinez in four sets. 25-year-old Garin is a top player on all courts but somewhat inhibited off his best clay surface and four sets conceded to Bernabe Zapata Miralles, Marc Polmans and Martinez so far is not great form coming into this test.
Djokovic was the winner in their only previous encounter back in 2020 at the inaugural ATP Cup and whilst Garin has gradually improved since then this is still likely to fall I straight sets. Denis Kudla provided the template for how to get the crowd onside and that should start to annoy the world number one if it continues through the rounds. Still, an annoyed Djokovic is a dangerous Djokovic and Garin has not shown enough on grass this week to suggest he can stop this from falling in three.
