THE PREDICTION
Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini has progressed comfortably enough through to the round of 16 at Wimbledon via three wins over Guido Pella, Botic Van de Zandschulp and Aljaz Bedene. The Italian is a firm outsider for a first Grand Slam title here and certainly has a great chance of reaching the final in his side of the draw. Having won his first title on grass last week at Queen’s the 25-year-old is now riding an eight-match winning streak. In his way is a surprising round of 16 entrant as world number 79 Ilya Ivashka overcame an exhausted Jordan Thompson in straight sets on Saturday. The Belarusian is enjoying his best year on tour so far but making the second week of Wimbledon on his debut is certainly a shock.
The momentum Ivashka is gathering at SW19 will make him Berrettini’s toughest match yet and the Italian will do well not to underestimate him as many opponent have this year. Ivashka took the first set off Rafael Nadal on clay at the Barcelona Open before the Spaniard knew where he was and also beat Alexander Zverev at the Munich Open. Berrettini has been challenged in places already and this match could see a few tiebreaks before the end but the world number nine should still be able to take this in three if he plays to his best ability. Take him to win outright here for a safer option as Ivashka is a dangerous foe to discount.
