World number 27 Madison Keys brought herself firmly into the Wimbledon title question with an excellent straight-sets victory over the 13th seed Elise Mertens on Friday. 26-year-old Keys has not dropped a set yet this week and the former US Open finalist has all the experience she needs to navigate the latter stages of the tournament. In her way is in-form Viktorija Golubic after the Swiss dismissed her second-successive American opponent in comprehensive fashion. After an initial tough opener against the 29th seed Veronika Kudermetova, Golubic conceded just five games against Danielle Collins and Madison Brengle and she will be confident coming into this likely enthralling battle.
The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record having won a straight-set match each on hard courts at the 2017 Miami Open and in the Fed Cup group stages in 2019. However, we have not seen this version of Keys for some time and it sometimes seems even she is surprised with how well she is playing. That kind of joyous momentum will prove hard to stop this campaign for anyone and despite Golubic’s brilliant efforts so far it is hard to see anything but an outright win for the 23rd seed.
