THE PREDICTION
World number 19 Felix Auger-Aliassime came through what was shaping up to be a blockbuster of a third round match with Nick Kyrgios before the Aussie was forced to retire. The pair took a set apiece in an entertaining match and exchanged warm words afterwards but 20-year-old Auger-Aliassime can count himself fairly fortunate to have reached the round of 16 here for the first time. The Canadian lost to Ugo Humbert in the third round on his debut in 2019 but has come back two years on an altogether more consistent performer and he clearly has the game to do well on grass. Facing him is world number six Alexander Zverev who did not enjoy the best of performances against Taylor Fritz on Saturday but coming back from a set down will do nicely for the German.
Both players have never made it past this stage of Wimbledon which is a damning statistic for 24-year-old Zverev that he will be desperate to improve on. He finished runner-up to Dominic Thiem at the US Open last year from two sets up and that experience does look to have made him a better competitor, though his level dropped considerably against Fritz and he will require his best to oust Auger-Aliassime. After his shocking US Open loss, Zverev went back to basics in Cologne where he won the first of two tournaments there by beating Auger-Aliassime in the final. The German leads their head-to-0head record 3-0 so far and is yet to concede a set to the youngster, though this first meeting on grass should be more of a level playing field. FAA is well capable of taking at least a set here so Zverev to win outright seems the most reasonable outcome.
