THE PREDICTION
17-year-old Coco Gauff’s professionalism and maturity this week at Wimbledon has been nothing short of extraordinary. The 20th seed is yet to drop a set after three impressive wins over Francesca Jones, Elena Vesnina and Kaja Juvan with the last two rounds coming on a Centre Court she is increasingly making her home. The world number 23 broke onto the world stage here in 2019 when she beat five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in the first round and ran through to the round of 16 which she has easily emulated this campaign. Gauff will have to beat another former champion if she is to proceed any further and this promises to be an electrifying first meeting with Angelique Kerber.
33-year-old Kerber was the champion here in 2018 and after some wilderness years the German looks to be on the way back to her best form. The world number 28 struggled to find her intensity early-on against Aliaksandra Sasnovich and went down a set quickly, which is no surprise after an incredible three-hour second round classic with Sara Sorribes Tormo. However, Kerber fought back to win the following two sets to the tune of just one conceded game as she clearly has rediscovered a hunger for success. What an incredible match this could prove to be on Monday. Coco Gauff is still a teenager but the 20th seed by right and she should be able to win at least a set here with the crowd behind her.
