THE PREDICTION
World number 18 Hubert Hurkacz is through to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time after an excellently managed return to court on Tuesday against Daniil Medvedev. The 24-year-old was 2-1 down when rain caused their round of 16 match to carry overnight onto Centre Court on Tuesday and he looked like the readier opponent from the off after the restart. Hurkacz came into Wimbledon on a six-match losing streak after struggling to cope with the first Masters title of his career at the Miami Open in April but the Pole looks back to his best now and ready to continue fulfilling his potential. World number eight may well have been expecting to face the second seed Medvedev in the quarter-finals but he will be confident in his own ability after his best performance yet this campaign on Monday. The eight-time Wimbledon champion will have been immensely glad to win his round of 16 match with Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets to conserve energy and, secretly, likely pleased that Hurkacz played five sets over two days.
39-year-old Federer was the winner in their only previous encounter which was also a quarter-final, though on a hard court at Indian Wells in 2019. Federer has extended his records of never losing in the third and round of 16 for another year but at the business end of the tournament it remains to be seen how much he has left to give. So far he has improved with every match but Hurkacz will make him work very hard indeed on Wednesday. Federer has lost at this stage of Wimbledon more than any other with four defeats from his 13 in total at SW19 and Hurkacz should look to Milos Raonic and Kevin Anderson for recent inspiration with both heavy-hitters beating Federer over five sets in 2016 and 2018, respectively. The majority of Centre Court will be behind the record title holder but Hurkacz’s temperament should be able to cope with that more than most. Both players should be able to take a set here but the likeliest winner just about remains Federer.
