THE PREDICTION
World number 13 Karolina Pliskova was riding a three-match losing streak coming into Wimbledon and had little form to speak of as she poorly defended her Italian Open and Eastbourne International titles. However, the 29-year-old has burst into life at SW19 and is clearly enjoying her tennis again as she completed her fourth straight-sets win in a row on Monday over in-form Liudmila Samsonova. The Czech has bested her Wimbledon personal record by reaching the quarter-finals and she has made at least the semi-finals of the other three majors. In her way of a first semi-final at Wimbledon is surprise last-eighter Vikrorija Golubic, who has quietly gone about her best Grand Slam showing by some distance. A third round exit here in 2019 was the 28-year-old’s best result until this fortnight but she has shown excellent form on grass this swing and must be taken seriously moving forward.
Golubic was the winner of their only previous encounter way back in 2016 as she fought back from a set down in the Fed Cup for Switzerland against the Czech Republic. The Swiss has been underestimated throughout her Wimbledon campaign but the defeat of Madison Keys in straight sets in the round of 16 makes a mockery of that. However, Pliskova’s results read even better and the eighth seed is yet to drop a set against the likes of in-form Tamara Zidansek and Samsonova. As the likelier of two very capable winners here, take Pliskova to claim at least a set.
