THE PREDICTION
2018 Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber is riding a nine-match winning streak after claiming her first title in three years at the Bad Homburg Open. The 33-year-old is making winning a habit and played against the crowd on Monday to beat the 20th seed Coco Gauff, who played well throughout. Kerber’s second round three-set victory over Sara Sorribes Tormo was one of the matches of the tournament so far and her counter-punching looks to be back to somewhere near its devastating best in time for a surprising tilt for a fourth Grand Slam title out of nowhere. World number 22 Karolina Muchova will have to be at her best if she is to break through that wall but the Czech has been excellent all campaign and made her second-successive quarter-final at SW19 by ousting Paula Badosa in straight-sets on Monday.
The 24-year-old has faced four really tough opponents,. Not least Roland-Garros runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and bested them all so far but this will be the toughest match yet. Muchova has lost to Kerber in both of their previous encounters at the Miami Open and in Monterrey, both in 2019 on hard courts. With both players likely at their best on grass this should be a really entertaining battle between Muchova’s offence and Kerber’s defence. It is hard, however, not to see the more experienced Kerber fight her way through this. Take the German to win outright here in what could be another marathon match.
