World number 12 Denis Shapovalov is winning over fans at Wimbledon with his high-risk tennis and he beat the 8th seed Roberto Bautista Agut on Monday in straight sets. The 22-year-old should be commended for his maturity despite a sub-par showing from Bautista Agut, particularly in his intensity to break back immediately. That kind of performance is the marker of a truly elite player and the Canadian has proven a lot of doubters wrong so far at SW19 as he continues to string good performances together. Shapovalov has only played three matches to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for a first time after receiving a walkover to the third round and that could really come in handy here against the 25th seed Karen Khachanov. 25-year-old Khachanov was part of a monumental five-set slog with Sebastian Korda on Monday that eventually fell 10-8 in the final set, coming just under four hours.
Although there will be a day’s rest before the quarter-finals for the male players, and the fact that Khachanov is one of the fittest on the ATP tour, fatigue could well still be a factor in how this second meeting plays out. Shapovalov was the winner in their only previous encounter, taking a Davis Cup semi-final in three sets back in 2019 during his last spurt of this kind of form but this should be a closer contest if the Russian is fresh enough. Khachanov is clearly enjoying himself on a tennis court for the first time in a long time and that will be a powerful force to stop. However, Shapovalov should be underestimated no longer and the new fans’ favourite can continue this run one round longer on Tuesday.
