Zhang Zhizhen comes into this first round match as he makes history by becoming the first Chinese man to play at Wimbledon in the Open era. The 24-year-old came through the qualifying round to reach this stage and he will be eager to make his mark. They key to success for him will be whether he can produce on his first serve as he possesses a powerful serve and he will also take heart from some of his performances in Nottingham in recent weeks.
ANTOINE HOANG
Similar to Zhizhen, this is Hoang’s debut at Wimbledon in the main draw and after coming through the qualifying rounds to reach this stage, he will be keen to do well. Hoang is more of a clay court specialist but he has shown some promise in the last few weeks at Nottingham and in the qualifiers to suggest he can compete on grass.
THE PREDICTION
Two Wimbledon newcomers meet here as Zhang Zhizhen plays Antoine Hoang in the first round. The spotlight will firmly be on Zhizhen who becomes the first Chinese man to play at Wimbledon in the Open era and there will be plenty of focus on him from the world’s media. They both played and lost to the same opponent at Nottingham recently with Andreas Seppi beating both of them, but Zhizhen met Seppi again in the second week and beat him which may offer something of a benchmark to compare them. Hoang has been in the qualifying tournament before and has typically struggled on grass so with Zhizhen possessing a big serve, he is favoured here assuming that holds up and he can deal with the pressure around him.
