THE LOWDOWN
VICTORIA AZARENKA
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka lost in the semi-finals of the German Open to eventual champion Ludmilla Samsonova last weekend before entering Bad Homburg. The Belarusian also played well there but pulled out at the quarter-final stage to protect her body ahead of a quickly opening draw at Wimbledon. The 31-year-old has 21 titles to her name from an illustrious career and she won back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2012 and 2013. Azarenka finished runner-up to Naomi Osaka at the US Open last season but she has not yet made it past the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
KATERYNA KOZLOVA
27-year-old Kateryna Kozlova took a set off eventual Nottingham Open champion Johanna Konta earlier this month but fell at the round of 16 stage. The Ukrainian failed to escape the qualifiers at the Birmingham Classic after that but she came up against a stern test against Coco Vandeweghe there. Kozlova reached a career-high 62nd in the WTA world rankings back in 2018 but she is currently way down at 157th ahead of her fourth appearance at Wimbledon. She has won just four matches at Grand Slams to reach four second round exits for her best showings so far.
THE PREDICTION
Kateryna Kozlova has never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam and not past the first round at Wimbledon so she looks to have her work cut out for her against Victoria Azarenka. The world number 14 is attempting to become the third mother to win a Grand Slam in the Open Era, just like Serena Williams, and a US Open final last season justifies her potential to do so. This first meeting with Kozlova should be a fairly one-sided contest and the Belarusian will hold nothing back as she tries to limit her time on court this fortnight. Take Azarenka to win in straight sets on Tuesday.
