THE LOWDOWN
VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA
World number 32 Veronika Kudermetova lost in the first round of the Eastbourne International to Alison Riske and to the eventual German Open champion Ludmilla Samsonova the week before. The Russian has enjoyed by far her best season on tour, though, with an excellent 26-13 record and her first WTA title at the Charleston Open. The 24-year-old has yet to get past the third round of a Grand Slam but she will be a dangerous opponent to draw early on here.
VIKTORIJA GOLUBIC
28-year-old Vikrorija Golubic has played as much grass tennis as possible ahead of an intriguing Wimbledon campaign for the Swiss. The world number 66 struggled to make an impact at the Nottingham Open and the Birmingham Classic but she made it all the way to the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne International before a three-set defeat to Anett Kontaveit. Golubic is in much better form than her current ranking suggests, even her career-high ranking at 63rd, and she will be confident of getting at least close to her best Grand Slam placing which she made here in a third round exit in 2019. Golubic has just one WTA title to her name having won the Gstaad Open in 2016.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a really well-contested first round match on Monday at Wimbledon between in-form Viktorija Golubic and Veronika Kudermetova. The Russian is still possibly the favourite on 2021 form but Golubic has been thriving on the grass and came very close to beating Anett Kontaveit last week in Eastbourne. Considering Kontaveit then made the final via a Camila Giorgi injury, Golubic was just a tiebreak away from the final. She will be dangerous from the outset here having beaten fellow Swiss and grass specialist Belinda Bencic last week in Eastbourne and it could be an upset for Kudermetova here if she fails to prepare. Take Golubic to win at least a set in this one, as she has even in recent defeats in grass.
