TEREZA MARTINCOVA
Tereza Martincova has been busy on the grass in preparation for Wimbledon having played eight matches across tournaments in Nottingham and Birmingham and she will be feeling good about her game given that she claimed notable victories over Sam Stosur and Jelena Ostapenko. This will be only her second appearance in the main draw at SW19 but she is heading in the right direction at career-high rank of 87.
ALISON RISKE
World number 31 Alison Riske played well to beat Veronika Kudermetova in the first round of the Eastbourne International but then was knocked out by first seed Aryna Sabalenka. The 30-year-old has struggled with form and fitness this season but could be coming into rhythm just in time to emulate her best Grand Slam showing having made the quarter-finals here in 2019. Riske has two WTA titles to her name including the 2019 Libema Open on grass which is almost certainly her best surface.
THE PREDICTION
This is perhaps not as straightforward as it first looks for Alison Riske, as Tereza Martincova has been putting in the hard yards on grass recently and has enjoyed some promising results with quarter-final appearances in both Nottingham and Birmingham to speak of. The Czech player – who is something of a late bloomer – appears to be on an upward trajectory in her career and she will look to follow on from her second-round appearance at the French Open. Riske undoubtedly has the greater pedigree at this level and reached the quarter-finals in her last appearance at SW19, but an upset could be on the cards here in light of Martincova’s recent momentum. Short of backing the underdog, opting for this to go to three sets could be the value choice in the betting markets.
