SLOANE STEPHENS
Sloane Stephens beat two strong Karolinas at Roland-Garros, both Pliskova and Muchova in straight sets, in a brief flurry of excellent form before losing in the round of 16 to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova. The world number 73 has six WTA titles to her name including her fabulous run to the US Open trophy in 2017 and she also finished runner-up at Roland-Garros in 2018. 28-year-old Stephens has made at least the quarter-finals in all four Grand Slams and did so at Wimbledon in 2013. The American favours the clay but she is clearly an excellent all-court competitor.
PETRA KVITOVA
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has enjoyed the best successes of an illustrious career here and she reached five successive quarter-finals between 2010 and 2014. The Czech star played a good tournament at the Bad Homburg Open last week but fell to the eventual champion Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals. Last season, the world number 10 made the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and the semi-finals of Roland-Garros but she will be targeting nothing less than another title here.
THE PREDICTION
This is a pretty mouth-watering first round clash between two Grand Slam champions as the 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens takes on two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (2011, 2014). There is a small amount of doubt over Kvitova’s ability to string seven wins together at SW19 as she recently returned from an ankle injury but the Czech is a well-loved champion here who will be made to feel as welcome as possible by the crowds. 28-year-old Stephens is one of the best players on tour when she finds her best tennis but a little erratic. Stephens leads their head-to-head record 2-1, although Kvitova was the most recent winner back in 2019 at the Wuhan Open. In an exciting match that could go any which way, take Kvitova to win at least a set at the home of the best successes of her career.
