SAM QUERREY
After a first-round exit at Roland-Garros, Sam Querrey quickly turned his attention to the grass and he made it to the semi-finals of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart but failed to back that up in Halle. However, finishing runner-up to world number two Daniil Medvedev last week in Mallorca is an excellent result that makes the American a sudden threat in SW19. The American is 71-40 all-time on grass and has a higher win percentage on this surface than any other so he will be confident of demonstrating his ability at Wimbledon, an event that seems to bring the best out of him. The 33-year-old has made at least the quarter-finals in three of his last four appearances at SW19 while he made it to the semis in 2017 and he will hope to continue his excellent record here.
PABLO CARRENO BUSTA
World number 13 Pablo Carreno Busta took the first set of his semi-final battle with Daniil Medvedev at the Mallorca Championships last Friday but ultimately fell in three to the eventual champion. The 29-year-old won the Andalucia Open earlier this year to kick off a largely successful clay swing. Carreno Busta has five ATP titles to his name so far with two on hard courts and three on clay but he has also enjoyed deep runs at Grand Slams. PCB has reached the semi-finals of the US Open on two occasions in 2017 and last year when he lost in five sets to Alexander Zverev. However, the Spaniard has, remarkably, never made it past the first round at Wimbledon.
THE PREDICTION
This match could go any way at all here between grass specialist Sam Querrey and world number 13 Pablo Carreno Busta, who has never won a match at Wimbledon. 34-year-old Querrey has endured a dreadful few years on tour with last season’s grass season completely decimated but he is clearly happy to return to this surface. He finished runner-up to Medvedev’s Mallorca win on Saturday and reached the semi-finals at the Stuttgart Open to suggest he could pull off something quite special here against the Spaniard. However, Carreno Busta also enjoyed a strong tournament in Mallorca and he should be able to contribute heavily to this result as the winner of their only previous meeting back in 2019. If over three sets is an available option for this match, take it. Otherwise take Querrey to win at least a set in this exciting first round tie.
