Roger Federer is the record title-holder at Wimbledon with eight of his joint-record 20 Men’s Grand Slam titles coming here. The Swiss owns an incredible 103-13 career record at Wimbledon and has only lost three finals, two to Novak Djokovic and one to Rafael Nadal. 39-year-old Federer comes into his favourite tournament off the back of a disappointing round of 16 defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Halle Open. Federer reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros on just his third tournament of the year before pulling out to protect his fitness.
ADRIAN MANNARINO
Adrian Mannarino will hope his solid career record on grass can serve him well at Wimbledon as the Frenchman goes in search of a positive showing at SW19. He boasts a 13-9 record at this event and has progressed to the round of 16 on two of his last three outings here before coming up against the likes of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. This is the 32-year-old’s most successful surface but he will need to show an improvement on his 2021 form to stick around beyond the first couple of rounds. At the time of writing Mannarino has enjoyed a run to the semi-finals of the Mallorca Championships which could spell a return to form.
THE PREDICTION
There will be plenty of hype around what should be a truly beautiful match of tennis in the first round between classy Adrian Mannarino and the classiest there has ever been. World number eight Roger Federer lost in the round of 16 at the Halle Open but 10 days off the tour to practice could be just what he needs here and this is a kind first draw. World number 42 Mannarino is a very capable player but 2021 has not been kind to him so far, although there are signs in Mallorca that that could change. However, the Frenchman has lost all six previous encounters with Federer, including at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2018. Neither time did Mannarino take a set and a straight-sets victory for Federer looks on here too.
