THE LOWDOWN

ROBERTO CARBALLES BAENA

Roberto Carballes Baena is enjoying a relatively good season in 2021 thanks largely to some good displays on clay. He now switches to grass where he has never won a match having lost both times he reached the main draw in the first round at Wimbledon. Without any participation in the warm-up grass tournaments instead opting for a clay tournament in France after Roland Garros, he is likely to be up against it once again here.

VASEK POSPISIL

The first half of 2021 has been one to forget for Vasek Pospisil so far having only won one of the six matches he has played. Along with some fitness issues, the powerful Canadian has been a shadow of himself and his performances have been a long way from the levels shown in 2015 when he reached a career-best quarter-final appearance at SW19. He will need to drastically improve if he is to win here never mind reach the quarters.

THE PREDICTION

It is Vasek Pospisil who has much the better record on grass but his form has been so poor this season, it is hard to make too strong a case for him. He faces a clay-court specialist in Carballes Baena who is enjoying a decent season himself but has never found much success on grass. Pospisil has been targeting the grass season and preparing for it so that focus should help him. His game is better suited to grass than Carballas Baena and assuming his body holds up, he is marginally favoured to edge this one.
