World number 32 Reilly Opelka burst back into form at the Italian Open in May where he finally lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. The big-serving American has the game to succeed on grass like so many of his compatriots before him and a run to the Men’s Doubles final at Queen’s two weeks ago will certainly help him prepare. Opelka so far has two ATP titles to his name and has reached the third round of Grand Slams twice before.
DOMINIK KOEPFER
World number 62 Dominik Koepfer lost in the first round of both the Stuttgart Open and Halle Open as he came off his favoured clay surface to get some grass court practice in. However, the 27-year-old did enjoy plenty of time on court in the doubles at both tournaments and he should feel confident that he has sufficiently prepared. Koepfer is a solid competitor across courts but in his element on the clay where he reached a career-high 50th
in the ATP rankings back in May after reaching the quarter-finals of the Geneva Open. Had he not met Roger Federer in the third round of Roland-Garros earlier this month he could have emulated his best showing at a Grand Slam having reached the round of 16 at the US Open in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
This looks like a potential hidden gem on the order of play for those who find themselves checking out Court 14 today at Wimbledon. Despite his higher ranking and two ATP titles, Reilly Opelka has struggled to match Dominik Koepfer’s moxie and trails the German in a 0-2 head-to-head record. However, Opelka’s form really exploded into action at the Italian Open last month where he needed Rafael Nadal to oust him in the semi-finals. The big-serving American is more than just his power but a left-hander with Koepfer’s determination can cause him trouble on grass with that lower ball.
