THE LOWDOWN
PABLO CUEVAS
Despite enjoying some success in his career, 35-year-old Pablo Cuevas as never truly delivered at Grand Slam level and the fact that he has never gone beyond the third round of any major is a poor return for a man of his talent. Grass is his least favoured surface too, with just two second-round appearances at Wimbledon to show from his eight appearances in the main draw. The Uruguayan won a clay-court Challenger event in Lyon earlier in June but lost in qualifying at the grass-court Mallorca Open most recently.
LASLO DJERE
Laso Djere failed to perform at Queen’s as he was knocked out by Alex de Minaur in his only match of that event and that performance summed up his time on grass. He is only 1-5 throughout his career on this surface, although that solitary success did come the last time he featured at Wimbledon. He overcame Argentinian Guido Andreozzi in the first round before falling to John Millman and he faces a tall order to overcome his clear discomfort off his favoured clay.
THE PREDICTION
Neither of these players can be described as grass-court specialists by any stretch with neither having made it past the second round at Wimbledon in their careers. Both have had just one warm-up game on the surface in preparation for SW19 but those proved unsuccessful as Cuevas, clearly struggling to make the transition from clay, lost to world number 248 Lukas Klein in Mallorca while Djere fell to a much higher standard of opponent in the form of Alex de Minaur at Queen’s. Of the two, Djere looked the more comfortable on the surface and he is tipped to make it past the elder statesman here.
