ONS JABEUR
World number 24 Ons Jabeur won her first WTA title last weekend at the Birmingham Classic with a fabulous run to the final as the second seed there. Jabeur failed to double down as she lost in the round of 16 at the Eastbourne International to eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko but that is some excellent preparation on grass. The Tunisian is a powerful player who will be a real danger at Wimbledon now following a first title on grass. 24-year-old Jabeur has bever made it past the second round at Wimbledon but she has a quarter-final exit at the 2020 Australian Open to beat as her benchmark.
REBECCA PETERSON
Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson often goes under the radar but the world number 60 won two WTA titles in 2019 on the Asian swing to reach a career-high 43rd in the WTA world rankings. Peterson lost in three sets in the first round of the Bad Homburg Open to give her little preparation on grass ahead of Wimbledon but she is a great all-court player. As of yet the 25-year-old has underachieved at Grand Slams with just one third round placing at the US Open back in 2018 and she has never made it past the second round here.
THE PREDICTION
World number 24 Ons Jabeur has been a top player for years but her first WTA title won in Birmingham two weeks ago could be the spark needed to push on. 25-year-old Rebecca Peterson actually leads their head-to-head 2-0 so far with a win on clay and hard courts in 2018 and 2019 respectively. However, Jabeur’s recent success makes her the favourite as the Tunisian embarks on a potentially deep run at SW19 over the next fortnight. Jabeur will have to beat Peterson for a first time to get her campaign up and running but she should be able to overpower the Swede over possibly three sets so take her as the outright winner here.
